Seamless pipes are derived from solid steel that is in sheet or bar form and is formed into a solid round shape known as "billets", which are then heated and cast over a form such as a piercing rod to create a hollow tube or shell. These types of pipes are known for their ability to withstand pressure more efficiently than other methods of pipe manufacturing, as well as being fast and cost-effective. Gas lines and liquid-carrying pipes typically use seamless pipes.

High-pressure applications, such as refineries, hydraulic cylinders, hydrocarbon industries, and oil and gas infrastructure, widely use seamless pipes due to their ability to withstand high pressures.

Solid round billets simply form seamless pipes, eliminating the need for welding or joints and enhancing their strength and other characteristics, such as corrosion resistance, compared to other types of piping. These pipes, according to ASME, are also more effective at withstanding mechanical stress and have a higher operating pressure than welded pipes, which are known as non-seamless pipes.

In general, the application of seamless pipes depends on the thickness of the pipe wall. Higher temperatures are required to produce pipes with thicker walls, which reduces deformation resistance and results in a larger deflection.
